Introduction

Our goal here is to introduce Enclosurists to helpful physical and digital tools. Having previously looked at some physical tools, today we look at our first digital tool: The Building Envelope Thermal Bridging Database (BETB).

Importance of reducing continuous insulation thermal bridging

In recent years, an emphasis has been placed on the use of continuous insulation (ci) for improved enclosure performance and reduced condensation potential. Given the improved performance of enclosures, the issue of thermal bridging becomes more significant, and therefore more attention is being paid to thermal bridging associated with the structure securing the exterior insulation.

To address this need, many new insulation attachment systems have flooded the market in recent years. Identifying the appropriate system for each project remains a challenge given that there are multiple performance factors to consider when selecting an insulation attachment system.

Morrison Hershfield developed the Building Envelope Thermal Bridging (BETB) Guide in collaboration with various individuals and industry partners.

According to betb.ca, the guide’s goal is “to help practitioners account for thermal bridging using a holistic approach that provides realistic evaluations of building envelope thermal performance for new and existing construction.”
In short, the guide helps practitioners research and select the most appropriate systems for their projects.

The BETB Database aims to enhance the BETB Guide user experience by reducing the effort required to perform holistic thermal transmittance calculations and empowering designers to consider alternatives. (source betb.ca)

The database allows users to search, sort, and compare assemblies, perform holistic thermal transmittance calculations, communicate and collaborate with project team members, and access associated educational resources.

The database allows users to select specific building details based on the proposed project materials and characteristics. Users can then further refine their options before downloading detailed detail sheets.

Conclusion

We’ve recently started playing with the database and found it quite overwhelming, in a good way. But, don’t take our word for it. The best way to understand the value of this powerful tool is to test it out.
